Storms are created when a center of low pressure develops with a system of high pressure surrounding it. There are many type of storms, Ice storm, Blizzard Snow storm, Ocean Storm, Firestorm, Dust devil, wind storm, Squall, Gale, Thunderstorm tropical cyclones form in the ocean if the conditions in the area are favorable and depending on their strength and location they are called different ways , such as tropical depression tropical storm, hurricane and typhoon.
Taiwan is a solitary island on the western edge of the Pacific Ocean, so it always has many typhoons during summer time. The most typhoons occur in August, followed by July and September.
Typhoon Morakot was not the strongest typhoon but it was the deadliest typhoon to impact Taiwan in recorded history. It formed on August 2 2009 and dissipated August 11 2009. It affected 5 areas including Taiwan, the Philippines, Japan, China, South Korea and North Korea.
It was just a middle typhoon with 145 km/h wind speed. (The strongest one was 220 km/h) But Morakot had 3060 mm rainfall in 5 days. So it caused severe flooding in southern Taiwan and triggered mudslides. One mudslide buried the entire town of Xiaolin. It was the deadliest typhoon in Taiwan`s meteorological history. There was many casualties 673 people dead and 26 missing in Taiwan. It also caused catastrophic agricultural losses, over NT$14 billion dollar.(US $443 million)
According to statistics by National Fire Agency in Taiwan, over the past 50 years, natural disasters brought about agriculture, fishery, water conservancy and transportation facilities direct over NT$8066 billion dollar, house losses $4018 billion, indirect losses $4834 billion and human casualties economic losses $65.6 billion. The total amount of the losses are $1.76 trillion dollar, an average annual loss of more than $35 billion. Typhoon disaster losses account of 85%
