Taiwan's history documented was found from about 1624, the Dutch entered to Taiwan. But before that, Taiwan already had the human activities and state power evidence. The human habitation and activities in Taiwan was found the dates can back up to tens thousands years ago. About 3000 BC ago,  an agrarian culture appeared can reflect  Taiwanese aborigines ancestors advent.


In 1626, The Spanish occupied in the north, but  in 1642 the Dutch were drive out. In 17th century, the Dutch colonized Taiwan. Taiwan has been called "Formosa" is from Portuguese, is mean "Beautiful Island" .

In 1662, Zheng Cheng-gong had lost control of mainland China. In 1644, he defeated the Dutch and started to established operations on the island. In 1683, the Qing Dynasty had defeated Zheng's forces.

In 1895, the Qing broke out the war with Japanese was called "Sino-Japanese War".  The Qing was defeated to Japan and signed the "Treaty of Shimonoseki,"  Taiwan was ceded to Japan as part of Japan. 

In 1945, after the World War II, the Kuomintang (KMT) lead the Republic of China (ROC)  became to Taiwan the ruling government.  KMT lose control of mainland China after the Chinese civil war in 1949. The Communist Party of China had announced the People's Republic on the mainland. Belong of KMT government- ROC had to retreat to Taiwan. Chiang Kai-shek declared martial law.  In 1952, Japan formally renounced Taiwan all territorial rights in the San Francisco Peace Treaty. 

The KMT dominated Taiwan and the Taiwan Strait the opposite Kinmen, Wuchiu and the Matsu Islands for forty years until Chiang Ching-kuo promulgated democratic reforms in the 1980s. Lee Teng-hui who was Chiang's successor reforms continued.  In 1996, he  implemented the first-ever direct presidential election and becoming president. In 2000, Chen Shui-bian was elected president and becoming the first non-KMT president. He was re-elected in 2004. In 2008, belong KMT- Ma Ying-jeou was elected president and subsequently re-elected in 2012 until now.
